Love Is The Greatest Law

Love is the Greatest Law

Love is the Greatest Law - Serenity Sunday article by Genevieve Gerard

In every spiritual journey, there come questions about how to live your life that is best in keeping with living a conscious and Soul infused life. Of course, humanity has pondered these questions since the dawn of time.

There are in every religion guidelines and rules that were created to help in those decisions of what is right, what is good. These guidelines often direct what is expected in a variety of situations or circumstances.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

In fact, many religion’s Holy Books contain a myriad of rules and regulations, laws that must be followed or at least considered by those who wish to live a spiritual life. However, guiding your life by laws and rules does not guarantee that you do what is right.

Some of these Laws are timeless. Some of the Laws are archaic and seem irrelevant in modern times, needing interpretation even to be understandable. It may be easier to think that all that is required of you to live a spiritual life is to “follow the rules” however, there is a higher calling. That is to let Love be your guiding law.

Although it is helpful to have guidelines for your behavior, sometimes rules can become an obstacle to living a life that brings you into ever-increasing awareness and expression of your Soul. As I write this post and meditate upon what helps or hinders us as human beings, it seems that just following laws takes you away from what living a spiritual life is all about.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF LAWS

When you consider these laws, I find it easiest if you divide laws into different types of laws.

Some laws are rules and guidelines for right human relationships, such as the 10 Commandments, a mix of guidance for what you should do and what you should not do.

There are also ancient laws from the Ageless Wisdom that direct you to live by principles, which are paramount, such as Harmlessness and Right Speech. These are not “Thou Shall or Thou Shalt Not” rules of conduct, but rather ways to lead your life for greater success to bring you into Right Relationship with others.

There are also in life and nature, Laws that govern life that cannot be changed or overruled. They always apply. They are impersonal but can be used to benefit your life when you understand them and grow in consciousness and live in harmony with these laws. A simple example of this would be the Law of Gravity, which can be harnessed to help you relax in meditation. It is always there. It is always true. You can count on it.

Similarly, some universal laws or principles can be harnessed for your benefit like The Law of Attraction or the principle that “Energy Follows Thought.” These can be life enhancing and life transforming but have much broader reach than just living your life by following rules. Understanding these laws can help empower your life.

Nevertheless, there is so much more than just following rules to living a joyful, happy and prosperous life. It is much easier to follow the rules and since you do not blatantly break the rules conclude that you think you have done all that you need to do. The rules, the laws, then take the place of you needing to be in right relationship with God, with your Soul, with your fellow man.

LOVE IS THE GREATEST LAW

These thoughts and considerations between the law and love are not new. St Thomas Aquinas wrote hundreds of years ago extolling the virtue of following, not a series of rules but Love as the guideline for right action and right relationships, between people and between you and God. His teachings have often been summarized into saying, “Love God and do as you please,” or in some translations, “Love God and do as you will.”

Certainly when Jesus was asked to clarify what was most important of the many laws that the Hebrews followed when he walked upon the earth he replied, “You should Love God with all your heart, your mind, and your Soul and you should love your neighbor as yourself.” I have always found this passage in the Bible most instructive for my life.

I have long strived in my spiritual journey to let Love be the guiding principle for how I live. To use Love as the determining factor in relationships with others and with my relationship with God seems a much clearer principle than a legalistic list of rules and laws. Jesus concluded, as St. Augustine later wrote, that Love was the most important guideline for your life, not Law.

To let love be the guide in your life and behavior is a higher standard. When St. Augustine wrote, “Love God and do as you will,” he concluded that if you truly loved God, what you do would honor and respect both God and others. This is also in line with many of the guidelines that are extolled in the Ageless Wisdom of Harmlessness and Right Speech as right action.

As Jesus taught, “God is Love.” When you express Love, you are aligning with the Love that God gives to you and the Love that is the nature of your Soul. It is Love that is the nature of your Soul and Love that is the basis of the “I-Thou” relationship with God that demonstrates the unconditional grace and forgiveness that so bless a spiritual life.

There are those who say that learning to Love is the whole purpose of living. What you learn when you truly love is one of the most valuable things in the universe. It is said that Love is the most powerful force in the universe and it “sets the spheres in motion.” Learning to Love, striving to Love, especially loving unconditionally gives you a truly extraordinary life.

When Love is considered as the way to conduct your life, many positive and significant factors fall into place. This is particularly the case in relationships with others and in what is experienced in your relationship with God and relationship with your Soul. Being in right relationship with God brings with it “The Peace that Passes Understanding.” Being in relationship with your Soul brings Love into your life for Love is the very nature of your Soul. Your Soul loves you completely, understands you completely and as it aligns with your personality, your mind, and your emotions bring to you a sense of well-being that is unique and powerful.

Joy is the spontaneous response to being in right relationship with your Soul. Being guided by Love, and the wisdom of your Soul opens your life to happiness and wonder.

Your Soul is the part of your spiritual anatomy, the spark of Divine Light that has created you, that is eternally One with the Divine. No matter what you do. No matter where you go. Whether you make major failures or mistakes in life or whether you are successful beyond your dreams, this unity of your Soul with God is unlimited by space or time. It is your birthright, and it is your essential nature. And Love is the nature of your Soul and the nature of God. THEY ARE INSEPARABLE.

This basic truth makes Love always the answer, no matter what the question. If you consider this, any ethical decisions you must make in life will be the right choice when you let Love be the guide. To demonstrate Love to others in light of what is truly loving is often a challenge. To make decisions in your life that demonstrate loving yourself is often a challenge. To extend that to showing your Love for God is an even higher standard. It is these considerations that are inherent in Jesus’s two great laws and St. Augustine’s moral shortcut of “Love God and do as you will.”

It is in the consideration of Love as the director of your behavior, that all the laws of any religion are fulfilled. To let Love guide you in your decisions can transform your relationships and can transform your life into a life of greater satisfaction and joy than you can imagine. So many aspects of what is so often frustrating in relationships disappear when you give Love and return Love.

Issues of forgiveness, compassion, and understanding fall naturally into place when Love is applied. If you love God with all of your heart and your Soul and you are loving to others and loving to yourself you are automatically living in agreement with the Ten Commandments, and the rules and codes of conduct created from ancient times into the present.

By doing this you honor the “Golden Rule.” Your actions follow the teachings of the Ageless Wisdom of harmlessness and right speech. Right action and right relationships are automatic when Love guides all that you do.

Let Love be your guide and it will fulfill all the laws.
– Genevieve Gerard

Love is not passive. It is an active and dynamic force for good in the world. It is strong and supported by the Will to Good. To live Love, you are bringing peace and goodwill to the world. It starts a chain of events that makes the world a better place for all.

In today’s often violent and dangerous world, it is good to consider the strength of Love and the power of Goodwill and the “Will to Good.” Love is not weak, and it can stand up for and protect with power, but never hate or negativity. Learning how to live this aspect of Love is vital to a peaceful world. Helping others to not harm themselves or others is a part of loving intelligently with will and wisdom.

LOVE AFFIRMATION

Since “energy follows thought,” it may be helpful to say and use this affirmation when you consider how to relate with another.

“I Love You.”

By Loving You I wish for you
only what is good and beneficial to you.

In all that I am and all that I do with you
I strive to honor and respect who you are.

I know we are different people with different needs.

I love me and strive to honor and respect myself
doing what is good and beneficial for me,
physically, emotionally and mentally.

I Love God and in all that I am and all that I do
I strive to express and demonstrate that Love.

AS YOU USE THIS AFFIRMATION, CONSCIOUSLY CONNECT WITH YOUR SOUL.

Using this affirmation as a guide to determine how Love is best served in any situation in life will be empowering for you. Ponder on this!

Namaste,

Genevieve

Discover How To Love Yourself

Discover How To Love Yourself

Read Discover How To Love Yourself by Genevieve Gerard

What does it mean to love yourself?

Discovering how to love yourself is an essential part of good mental health and emotional wellbeing.

Loving yourself is also demonstrated by the ways you take care of your body, by eating well, sleeping well and giving yourself the things you need to thrive, to grow and to be successful and happy.

Loving your self is one of the first and important steps to a successful loving relationship.

It might seem that to love yourself is so basic that it is easy and natural. However, in my many years as a counselor and a coach, I have found that for many people this is a challenge.

There is a lot of glamour and illusion about what it means to love. That is true when it comes to relationships and especially true when it comes to loving yourself. Loving yourself, honoring yourself and respecting yourself are foundations of a loving and healthy relationship.

It is said, that before you can love someone else you must first love yourself. So ask yourself what you can do to learn to demonstrate self-love if you realize it lacks in your life. Take the very first step to understanding and acknowledge that you are worthy of being loved, exactly as you are. In one of my previous articles “The Greatest Love”, there are eight affirmations you might find helpful in this process. (I have provided a link to that article at the bottom of this article.)

Relationships with others, especially romantic relationships, all too often fail to result in the fantasy of “happily ever after.” To sustain a real relationship you need to establish realistic boundaries of what you are willing to give in a relationship and what is not acceptable in a relationship. Knowing yourself, respecting yourself and being true to yourself in a relationship is vital.

Shakespeare said it well in Hamlet with Polonius’s advice to his son.

To thine own self be true. And it shall follow as the night to the day, thou can’st not be false to any man.

Being true to yourself and honest in your agreement’s with loved ones are critical.

My grandmother once gave me the sage advice:

Don’t put up with the first day in a relationship behavior you are not willing to accept for the rest of your life.

When I think of the times and ways that I failed to heed that advice, I see many of my life’s mistakes that could have been avoided in friendships, in romances and even in business relationships.

How To Love Yourself

Integral to my grandmothers advice is to both know and respect yourself, and honor and love yourself, as someone who is both deserving of love and who loves themselves.

It is wise to honor yourself, know yourself and then, in any new relationship consider what is acceptable to you. In this way, you are true to yourself, and you are beginning a new relationship open to a future built on honesty and mutual respect. This establishes a context in which you can learn to love one another, grow and thrive together.

A part of learning to love yourself is letting yourself both accept and receive the love that is all around you. There are so many ways that you can demonstrate your love and so many ways that love can enrich your life. Love is something that spans all of your relationships. It guides your relationships with friends, with family, and lovers. It is integral to your relationship with the Divine.

Love is available for you. Open your life to it. Love is all around you. Let yourself accept the love that is coming to you, from relations and God. Your Soul is an unlimited source for loving yourself. I have found you can open yourself to that love and receive that love directly through meditation.

Love truly makes the world go around and is fundamental and reflected in all of your relationships. Loving yourself is a guideline you can use in all of your relationships.

Accepting and appreciating Divine Love affirms that you are a spark of Divine Light, and you are worthy of receiving love. Using the love of God and the love that your Soul brings to you, demonstrates to you what it means to love.

Having received love, you are also a source for love in the world.
        – Genevieve Gerard

An essential element of your ability to love is also your ability to love yourself. In the love that you give, you can be a blessing to others. Ponder on this.

When you love someone, you value and appreciate who they are and accept them. The same is true about loving yourself. You are unique and special. Appreciate, accept and enjoy who you are.

You are not perfect, but there is no reason you should be. Treat yourself with the compassion you would show to another. You have made mistakes in your life. Forgive yourself. There are faults and issues you are striving to resolve. Be gentle with yourself.

You are in an ongoing process of growing, transforming and becoming more and more of the person you are meant to be. Support that in yourself, for yourself.

Life is all about learning lessons. No mistake is meaningless if you have learned from it and grown from it. When you show patience and compassion for yourself, it becomes easier to show patience and compassion to others.

By forgiving yourself, you become a more forgiving person. The compassion and grace that you open up to become available in all of your relationships. As you learn to accept and respect yourself, you are also learning how to accept and respect others.

Learning to love yourself is an ongoing lesson in how to love, that makes you a better person. By loving yourself, you are demonstrating the skills and behaviors that are needed to demonstrate your love to others.

Ultimately, you know love because God loves you unconditionally and this love is shown to you with unlimited forgiveness, profound grace, and acceptance. When you let yourself accept and receive this love you are empowered to be a force for love in the world. You become a better person, a happier person and a more successful person.

You can be love, give love, demonstrate love with respect and honor for both yourself and others. The more you love, the more joy that comes into your life and the happier you become.

Namaste,

   Genevieve

Love One Another

Love One Another

Love One Another - Super Serenity Sunday blog by Genevieve Gerard

This article is part of my on-going series on love.

It is recorded in the Bible that when Jesus still walked among His disciples He gave this commandment “that you Love one another as I have loved you.” (John 15:12).

That this was given as a commandment is interesting and certainly demonstrates the importance of this instruction since the Bible records Jesus teaching his disciples throughout his time with them, but this is the only time I recall in the Bible that he made his teachings a commandment.

To me that means that this instruction takes on special emphasis. The commandment was not simply to Love One Another, but to Love One Another As I Have Loved You.

That He gave it as a commandment rather than teaching or instruction means that He was speaking this direction from the part of His consciousness as the Son of God. As such, He was instructing His disciples to love one another with a Love that was unconditional and transcendent. He was talking about Divine Love.

He was commanding his disciples to love one another from the consciousness of their Soul, to Love one another as a manifestation of Divine Love.

To even try to fulfill that commandment there are some things that must be understood about both Divine Love and the nature of the Soul. That Jesus was speaking of Divine Love is hinted at just before He gave that commandment. It is recorded that He said, “As the Father has Loved me, so I have Loved you.” (John 15:9). Divine Love is unconditional. Divine Love is eternal; therefore, when you love with Divine Love you love them from your Soul to their Soul.

Of course, to forge a bond of Soul Love, you must come from your Soul. Since your Soul is the part of your whole being that delivers and provides Divine Love in your life consciousness it is essential to open yourself and your awareness to your Soul if you wish to fulfill Jesus’s commandment.

Now, if you have been following my articles and my teachings you will note that coming into conscious awareness of the Presence of your Soul is something about which I write about a lot. It is to strengthen that teaching that I am writing this article.

For me to help you come into conscious awareness of your Soul is my mission in life. It is my purpose for writing these articles and it is my joy. It is a demonstration of the Love of the Christ which I invoke daily in my meditation to flow through me out into the world as an act of service and a manifestation of the Love of my own Soul. It is a way that I can fulfill Jesus’s commandment to Love one another as I have loved you to the very best of my ability.

To help you to come into conscious awareness of your Soul I recommend meditation.

As a start to that meditation I recommend that you set aside some sacred time for meditation. There are many things you can do to “set the stage” for meditation. Just know, there is nothing you must do to start meditating.

A Simple Guided Meditation

It is helpful if you begin your meditation time with intention. It is your intention to meditate rather than just think. This is a subtle but important difference. Intention ignites the process.

It is most effective when you choose to meditate to sit with your spine vertically aligned. That is a point of agreement among almost all who teach meditation. There are many reasons for this posture that I will discuss in future teachings, but this is the preferred posture for meditation.

Then to enter into meditation I suggest that you:

Calm your mind, open your heart, invite the Light. The Light you are inviting is the Light of your Soul.

As you sit quietly and receptively, there are some things you can do to bring the Light of your Soul into your conscious awareness. I have written about these steps in previous articles and encouraged you to read them for the insight, techniques, and instruction they provide (see related links at the end of this article.)

Since the purpose of today’s article and today’s instruction is to help you experience the Love of the Soul and Divine Love I would like to focus this meditation on that.

I encourage you to sit quietly and receptively with your mind calmed as much as you are able and your heart opened to receive the Love of your Soul and God’s Love as fully as you are able. Invite into your awareness the Light of your Soul.

These simple steps followed by quiet, receptive contemplation may be all that you need. I do recommend that you have a journal beside you so that you can record any thoughts and impressions you have received in the silence.

To go deeper into the experience and to focus your meditation on Love, the Love from your Soul to the Soul of another I encourage you to say from your heart, your mind and your Soul this mantra:

I open my heart to the Love of the Christ
and invite it to flow through me
out into the world to all who need it.

I open my life to be an instrument of Divine Love in the world
so that my life and my Love may be a blessing
and a service to others.

For this blessing, I give thanks.”

         – Genevieve Gerard

Follow the intoning of this mantra with a meditative time of receptivity and contemplation. I suggest sitting quietly for 15 to 20 minutes in the silence, and then recording any insights, thoughts or impressions you have received.

               – GG

When I have done this meditation, I feel my heart filled to overflowing with Divine Love and Transcendent Joy. I realize that by giving I have received such an abundance of Love that my heart has become a chalice overflowing that can touch and bless anyone I am in contact with throughout my day as I return to the challenges and chores of my life.

This blessing fills my day with a sense of peace, purpose, and joy. It is interesting to note that Jesus goes on to say in the Bible when he gives the commandment to “Love one another as I have loved you” in John 15:12 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. Ponder on this.

Namaste,

Genevieve

Day after Day

“I use Gift of Love as my morning meditation. It’s pretty amazing how much Genevieve has put into such a short meditation but it serves to set the tone for my day.

I like the bell tones in the beginning and use her words, “Calm your mind, open your heart, invite the light” throughout the day as a sort of mantra. The mantra is particularly useful when I am confronted with family members who are afraid or in pain. I have a variety of meditations available to me but find myself returning to this one day after day. I wait patiently for the final flourish of tones at the end.”

“I really enjoyed this meditation. It was much more than I expected and brought me into an awareness of just how connected we are to Spirit when we calm our minds and open our hearts.

The charge of love energy I felt was so tangible that I felt filled with it. A staggering amount of this love energy is available to us whenever we need it, if we only allow ourselves to connect and receive it. I’m doing this daily now and have seen positive changes in my life. Thank you Genevieve, for this wonderful gift.”

Mother’s Day 2012

Mother's Day

Mother’s Day 2012

The second Sunday in May is designated as Mother’s Day. It is a time to show appreciation and express our gratitude to our Mothers. Remember that the love a Mother demonstrates is special. The unconditional nature of a mother’s love serves as a reflection of Divine love.

Women often find that becoming a Mother changes them in ways much deeper and more profound than they had ever expected. Becoming a Mother is something, which once done cannot be changed for as long as you’re alive. All other roles can change in life, but being a Mother cannot be changed even long after your children have grown and moved into their adult life.

The bond that is forged between a mother and child is unique in our human experience. It is like no other relationship. So as this Mother’s Day approaches and unfolds let us take the time to reflect and remember with appreciation all of the unnamed blessings your Mother has bestowed upon your life. And if your Mother is still with you take the time and this opportunity to express your love and your gratitude to your Mother. It is for this that this day is set aside.

If for just 10 minutes you sit and ponder on what you can appreciate about your Mother, you may find your gratitude and love growing. Let yourself remember the little things that did not seem important at the time that can now be revealed as a blessing and benefit to who you have become, that were provided for you with love by your Mother as you grew into becoming the person you are today.

And if in this recollection you find sorrows that need healing, take this time to forgive and focus on the love and positive blessings that you received. As you express your appreciation and gratitude you will find an increase in understanding and compassion for this woman, your Mother. And if your Mother is still with you take this day to tell her how much your appreciate her. Express your love and your gratitude; it is what Mother’s Day is for.

Mother’s Day Quote

M-O-T-H-E-R
“M”
is for the million things she gave me,
“O” means only that she’s growing old,
“T” is for the tears she shed to save me,
“H” is for her heart of purest gold;
“E” is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
“R” means right, and right she’ll always be,
Put them all together, they spell “MOTHER,”
A word that means the world to me.

   – Howard Johnson

And Mothers, take this time to consider and appreciate your children for the love and the lessons of growth they have brought into your life. Let the experience of Mother and Child fill your life in a way nothing else can. Bathe in the golden warmth of these feelings and enjoy and appreciate them as the special experience of life that they are.

Holy Week Reflections

Holy Week Reflections

Time For Reflection photo by Genevieve Gerard from Holy Week Reflections

The week that leads up to Easter is referred to as Holy Week.

In the Christian Calendar, Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday.

Palm Sunday celebrates Jesus coming into Jerusalem to the accolades of the people. To the man Jesus, who traveled as a master teacher, a rabbi, teaching about God’s love for us, it must have been a time of celebration. Finally, the people were listening to him.

At last, they understood what he had been traveling around teaching and preaching. His message about God being more than a stern taskmaster to be appeased through adherence to the law and animal sacrifices, but rather a loving Father who was available for a deeply personal one-on-one (I-Thou) relationship with the people, His beloved children.

Imagine the relief and the joy of finally having His message be heard. Having worked so hard, traveling and teaching every place where people would gather to listen to him preach about God. They must be listening and learning he would have concluded, for as he entered into Jerusalem, they ran forward cheering him, throwing palm fronds in his pathway. So his feet were protected from the dirt and dust of the road.

Not only were they finally listening to his message, but they were also finally acknowledging him as the teacher and leader he was. After sacrificing so much of his personal needs and desires to travel from place to place to bring this message to humankind; often without even shelter from the elements, people were paying attention. He was achieving success. The part of Jesus that the theologians tell us was fully human must have felt all of our emotions of relief and pride and satisfaction that this work he had undertaken for the Lord was finally reaching the people. He must have had joy in his heart as he considered how this change in understanding their relationship with God would comfort the people and give them new hope and new promise in their lives.

This event, this celebrated entry to Jerusalem was after all the culmination of high risk. He had stood before the religious leaders of his time and defied the conventional thinking of his day, chastising the Pharisees for their pompous ways, even criticizing how they prayed and condemned their use of commerce in the house of God.

He knew he had made many enemies. The religious leaders criticized him. They considered him an upstart. They asked who he thought he was to take on the mantle of teaching the people about God. He was after all just a carpenter’s son from an outlying province of Galilee.

So we can certainly understand the relief and validation Jesus must have felt on Palm Sunday as he heard the people greet him with Hosannas. At that moment all of the work was worth it. People were getting the message. Lives would change, minds would change, and the most important relationship people had in their life, their relationship to God would change. The relief Jesus must have felt, the joy Jesus must have felt on that Sunday before Easter, the initiation of Holy Week is to those of us who know the story of what follows, bittersweet.

For we are aware, the story did not end there. And the real work of Jesus’ teaching was lying just ahead, out of sight, not yet fully revealed to him until the important events and revelations that were to follow in the span of time we have come to know as Holy Week.

I would like to think that Jesus was able to rest, relax and bask in those feelings of success and achievement that following Monday and Tuesday. Certainly by Wednesday when he instructed his disciples to prepare the Upper Room for the Passover dinner on Thursday he had begun to realize that more would be required of him. Much more would be needed than he could have imagined; much more than we could ever imagine having to give.

And I am sure that as it was being revealed to Jesus, the mystical understanding of the sacrifice he was being asked to make was not clear. Of course, he knew he had made many of the traditional religious leaders of his time angry at him. He condemned their lifestyle and accused them of misleading people about the relationship to God. But this intuition, this impression he was now receiving in his prayers and meditation that they would put him to death, seemed unfathomable.

As he pondered on this and prayed on this and wondered on this, the man Jesus did not understand all of the revelation, all of the choices of the coming week. All that would be required from him as he faced the ultimate tests of surrender and obedience was still to be revealed. The purpose of this sacrifice, the deep magic as C.S. Lewis called it, the transformation and gift to the world that would result from the events of the next few days, was not yet revealed.

As the hurt and betrayal of realizing one of his disciples would turn him into the Pharisees was revealed, Jesus knew deep in his heart, in the core of his being that his relationship with God required of him total obedience. Although he did not yet know what that would mean in the very real terms of life and death, he knew his faith in the Lord was strong, and he made the commitment to be faithful and obedient, no matter what the result. He knew that God was Love. He knew that to the very core of his being. And, whatever Love required of him, he was willing to give.

This brings us to what in my mind is the most important part of the Easter story. The most significant decision in the life and death and ultimately resurrection story of Jesus all happen on this Thursday before the events of Good Friday and before Easter could even be imagined. Here were the events that make the life of Jesus amazing as we ponder on the stories of Holy Week. At this time the events had not yet reached a point of no return. The outcome was not assured. A thousand possibilities could emerge to change things from what seemed to be the consequence of unfolding events.

There are those who believe that Jesus went through this most important night of his spiritual life, acutely aware of what was happening and what would happen from the Garden of Gethsemane to the Cross and even to the Resurrection of Easter Sunday. But to me, that dilutes the significance of Maundy Thursday and the strength demonstrated on Golgotha and the Cross. It is the humanness of Jesus that makes this story unique. It is the humanness of Jesus that makes a reflection on this Holy Week what gives us as disciples on a spiritual path hope and power. It is the humanness of Jesus that calls us to follow him and try to live up to his example.

As the Passover feast began, on Holy Thursday, Maundy Thursday, Jesus knew he had to do some extraordinary things. First, he must confront his betrayer. To have his intuition and spiritual insight reveal to him the betrayer and not speak out seemed wrong. After all this man, this betrayer had followed him, walked with him and worked with him for three long years.

And as Jesus looked out over his beloved friends and followers he must have realized that no matter how much he had hoped the logical consequences of that betrayal might not come to fruition, if the powerful did their worst to him he had to leave those who had followed him so faithfully some remembrance, some ritual to guarantee that all he had taught about God in the three years he wandered were not forever lost. If the worst result were to occur, the act of betrayal by one of his own made possible, He wanted to leave his disciples one last act, a ritual, a symbol to express the message he had taught.

Fortunately, Jesus was a biblical scholar. A Rabbi well versed in tradition and the scriptures. What he understood about this new way of understanding God, this profound astounding Love that God had revealed to him, represented a new kind of relationship with God. A relationship based on Love, a relationship of forgiveness and grace; a new covenant. So what he needed to leave these loyal friends and followers was a ritual to convey a new covenant relationship with God, a relationship much more pervasive and profound than the old covenant of “I will be your God, and you will be my people.” He needed a new covenant that demonstrated Divine Love; that showed love in a tangible, visceral manner. And since, if the consequences of this night were what he feared, he would show his love for God and his love for all his fellow man by making the ultimate sacrifice, the sacrifice of his life. It is said greater love has no man than this that he would lay down his life for others.

Since this ultimate sacrifice was certainly possible with the way events were conspiring, he would use the willingness to sacrifice his life, his body and his blood as the symbols of this new covenant, this ritual of remembrance.

As the time of his betrayal approached; since Jesus could well foresee the possible consequence of the traditional religious leaders getting him in their hands, he felt the need for prayer. He wanted to be surrounded by his loyal followers who loved him before he surrendered himself to his enemies. So he went with them to Gethsemane. He asked that they wait with him and pray with him. The hour was late. It was dark, and he needed the comfort of the love of his friends as he turned in complete obedience and surrender to the God he knew so well and loved so fully in prayer. And considering the devastating consequences of the events that seemed to be conspiring against him, he petitioned God that what he was seeing, as not only the possible but also the probable result of this night, could pass him by.

Imagine the hurt and betrayal he felt as he rose from prayer to find his followers sleeping. Here at the most painful and dangerous point of his life and his mission, they could not stay awake with him and pray with him. As he returned to prayer he made his ultimate decision, his final choice to demonstrate love. Perhaps he did not fully understand the reason his life must be forfeited to demonstrate this. If this is what was required, he surrendered his will to the will of his Father in full trust and obedience that he would give, whatever was required of him, even his body, even his blood to demonstrate Love.

Having made this decision when his captors came to claim him he went without resistance. The torture and indignations of what is called Good Friday were born with as much dignity as he could garner. Circumstances were no longer in his control. Having made the decision to follow this all through to its conclusion, he took up his Cross and carried it to the Hill of Golgotha. Jesus, being the teacher that he was, could not help but share his perspective of the events on the way to the hill of crucifixion. I am sure he struggled to understand why this sacrifice was necessary. Perhaps God needed to demonstrate a miracle as the scriptures told of miracles with other teachers and prophets who were faithful to God.

He need only suffer what pain this path offered remembering his purpose to demonstrate love. This was certainly a dramatic way to do it. But his faith and trust that it was necessary and important were absolute. He had prayed for this cup to pass by him and here he was, so it must be substantial. He knew God loved him. He knew he loved God. If this was the best way to demonstrate that love, he had faith that whatever the pain and the sorrow of this moment in time, it had a purpose. Although he might not understand it all, he had come here of his own agreement, his own surrender, his own willingness to be a symbolic sacrificial lamb to this new covenant he had come to understand.

Nailed to the Cross, between two thieves, pierced in the side, finally realizing that the miracle he expected would not be a dramatic rescue to demonstrate God’s power. He cried out to God, the first lines of a Psalm, Psalm 22, “My God, my God why have you forsaken me.” But as he did this he knew the words of the Psalm ended with an assurance of God’s faithfulness.

And then Jesus gave up his life.

We are told that at that moment the veil of the temple was rent. A mystical event had taken place that opened the separation between God and Man. Divine Love, the Love of the sacrifice that Jesus chose to make was anchored on the earth. The full meaning of what happened on that day in symbolic and mystical import may not be understood by our conscious mind. We know it was something special. We are aware it changed the way man reaches out to God and the way God reaches out to man.

The miracle that Jesus counted upon to save him on the Cross, the true miracle and meaning of the story of Easter occurred after the events of Holy Week in the astounding, unprecedented occurrence of the Resurrection. Jesus could not have predicted this for this miracle was outside of the understanding of mortal man. It was, however, a miracle that demonstrated something so filled with love and embedded with a grace that it had changed life as it was known 2000 years ago into something that could not be imagined when Jesus placed the Cross he had been forced to carry to the hill of his death.

The life of Jesus, the choices and decisions he made empower us as humankind even if we do not understand them; it shows us the potential and the power that we can possess as human beings.”

This lesson, this victory over death itself may be beyond the comprehension of man. It remains today a promise of hope, a promise of eternal life, a miracle of love and sacrifice that impacts the world and continues to affect the world today. And no matter what else humanity may learn in his quest for God. No matter what is demonstrated on the spiritual path. This demonstration of love, given by Jesus will remain unparalleled, unique and worthy of the honor and the glory. That a man can choose to sacrifice his whole being to bring love to the world continues to astound us today and will amaze us in the ages ahead.

Namaste,

Gift of Love

The Christmas Gift of Love

Today is Christmas Eve.  Around the world, children await the magical arrival of Santa Claus laden with gifts.  Songs are sung and stories are told.  Families gather and feasts are prepared.  Celebrations abound each according to their own traditions, some more secular and some more religious.  Gifts are given or exchanged.  People rush around and worry as the hour descends, spending money, wrapping gifts, decorating trees, so very busy, so very determined that a good time is had by all.

But in these upcoming moments to the gaiety and fun, let us take a few moments to focus upon the deeper meaning behind this event.  Let us ponder less upon the business and the material gifts to focus our attention on the love that is shared and the bonds that are strengthened.  Let us understand the gift giving from Santa as symbolic of the real gifts we are giving one another, the gift of Love.  It is that which is tangible long after the toys have broken or are relegated to the latest garage sale.  Although the material manifestations pass quickly away to make room for the new latest and greatest trinket or toy, it is the love and the openness of the heart that remains.

So as you give and receive this season consider the true gift that lasts forever, the gift of love.  Let that be the mark of the day that you bring into your heart and hold there.  Let that be the memory you cherish as you look back upon Christmas.

As you hand one another the brightly wrapped trinkets take the time and intention to consciously imbue the gifts you give with the love in your heart.”

And as you receive the gift that may not be exactly what you wanted, open your heart to receive the love that was intended.

In this is the secret of Christmas revealed. In this is the joy that is shared by the positive energy being created all around us as the positive thought and the desire to demonstrate our love permeates the very air around us even in the midst of the bustling crowds of often rude people as they rush about too busy and too stressed by the season.

It is the demonstration of our love for one another that is the true gift of Christmas. Let us open our hearts to our family and friends to that love.  Let us take a moment to consider and ponder that deeper meaning of this season.  Let us give conscious thought and conscious consideration and intention to the love we are demonstrating.

And if with Christmas we celebrate the birth of the Christ child tonight let us invite the love of the Christ into our hearts to be shared with everyone whose life we touch in this special season.  Sharing the gift of love is a gift we can all give, no matter the size of our wallet.  It is a gift we can give without worrying about if it is the right size or the right color.  The gift of love is always perfect and lasts forever.  It is a gift that keeps on giving long after the dishes are washed and everything is put away.

This Christmas, make the gift of love the biggest gift you give.

With Love and gratitude, from my heart to yours,

Genevieve Gerard
