Universal Brotherhood and
the Oneness of Humanity

This article is part of my ongoing series on Oneness and Group Consciousness.

There is in the world, and indeed even the Universe, a sacred principle that is a deep truth about who you are, and how things function.

Although this truth has been a part of every spiritual path explored over the history of human consciousness, it remains a principle with which humanity seems to have a struggle. That is the understanding of Brotherhood and of Unity.

In today’s climate of unrest understanding brotherhood and unity is even more important to everyone’s evolution.

The universal brotherhood of man is our most precious possession, what there is of it.

What is Brotherhood

The Oxford Dictionary defines it as an association, society, or community of people linked by a common interest, religion, or trade.

The simple meaning of the Universal Brotherhood of Mankind is the belief, feeling, or hope that all (wo)men should regard and treat one another as brothers and sisters.

On a higher level, according to theosophist E.A. Neresheimer,

In the process of evolution, humanity has differentiated from the great homogeneous ocean of consciousness in order that the soul may gain experience in matter; being now on the outer circle of manifestation, it appears to be apart, but it is destined in its natural course to return to the primal unity from whence it came.

The thread which has spun itself out from unity into differentiation connects each individual with the parent source, and through it with all else; and the innate qualities of the soul — Love, Sympathy, and Charity — are the manifestations thereof in man; these reside in the Heart.

According to the Esoteric Philosophy, the race has fortunately reached the outermost stage of realization of separateness, the time is at hand for the ascent on the return arc, the pendulum is swinging back and will bring with it an awakening towards spirituality. A psychic wave has already begun to sweep over the globe; in its course, it will rouse the latent spiritual faculties of mankind and develop intuition to a degree that will cause great changes in the Social Economy and produce a realization of our birthright, ‘The Universal Brotherhood of Man.’”

An understanding of this Universal Brotherhood of Mankind principle has been expressed and taught by every spiritual teacher and is an essential element in every spiritual path across many diverse cultures and religions practiced over thousands of years.

Helena Blavatsky talks about, in the Secret Doctrine Book 2 – Part 3, the Law of laws is the Law of Brotherhood — Alaya. Its unity extends beyond the human kingdom and enfolds bird and beast, shrub and tree, metal and stone, all the invisible elemental kingdoms of nature-spirits, and fairies, collective hosts of archangels, shining ones and devas, and the crown of them all — Perfected Man, Mahatmas, Buddhas, Dhyanis.

Within this principle is an understanding of how life works, and even more significantly, how we, as humankind, are created to work together.

The Principles of Brotherhood
Have Been Passed Down for Century’s

Sadly, the frequent failure of humanity to incorporate the principles of Brotherhood and the Oneness of Humanity into its interactions results in widespread sorrow and suffering. This is a condition that it is within the power of humanity to solve and resolve.

The failure to demonstrate the Brotherhood in human relationships and interactions leads to wars and holds back the kinds of international cooperation that could create abundance and prosperity across the world.

From the ancient days of the history of humanity throughout every world religion and spiritual practice, the concept of Brotherhood is integral, and our Unity and Oneness with one another is interwoven.

Within the concept of Brotherhood and understanding of the unity of all of humanity lies incredible power. That is why, throughout time, the principle of Brotherhood has been woven through every religion on earth. These enlightened beings formed the central religious teachings of a vast and diverse array of paths to right human relationships. They also focus on right human interactions, teach Brotherhood, and encourage an awareness of the Oneness of Humanity.

Over 5,000 years ago, this principle of Unity and Brotherhood was revealed by Arjuna on the battlefield as in the spiritual teachings of the Bhagavad Gita that guide the Hindi religion. This vital principle was demonstrated when Arjuna had the revelation “I can no longer war against myself.”

The importance of learning brotherhood is integral to the development of Buddhism as monks live and work together in monasteries throughout the world. In fact, the Brotherhood of Monks is the oldest religious brotherhood in the world; it was founded by the Buddha about 2,500 years ago and continues to exist to this day.

Certainly, Brotherhood is a central principle in Christianity when Jesus told his followers in Matthew: 24-41 “to the least of these my brethren.”

Brotherhood is not only based on faith, but it is also a part of that faith. The Prophet Mohamad said, “You cannot enter paradise unless you become a total believer, and you won’t become a total believer unless you love each other.“ Faith and community are inseparable in the faith community in Islam. Even an occasional reader of the Quran would note that it always addresses the Believers, not the Believer. All acts of worship that are declared pillars of Islam have a collective form that shows the importance of Brotherhood.

Likewise, there is the very ancient teaching of the code of Hammurabi that became a pillar of all lessons about ethics. This became known as the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.“

Without turning this article into a 100,000-page book on religious scholarship, I think it is right to say that within every world religion, brotherhood, and the Oneness of Humanity is integral to the teachings of the founding principles of that religion, along with the instructions of loving one another.

The Law of One

When we speak of the One Life, this is not merely a poetic phrase or symbol. It refers to the fact that we are all essentially that one same Life, as expressed in the diversity of form that constitutes our being on many levels (cellular and spiritual.)

Because of our interconnectedness, every action (or lack thereof) has an effect on every other aspect of nature. Like a pebble, thrown into a body of water, our actions ripple out, beyond the spheres of our immediate influence.

When considered at a deeper level, Universal Brotherhood may be understood as being at the heart of humanity, because of how practical it is to us in all aspects of our lives, not only as individuals but also collectively, as humankind.

Despite teachings in the consciousness of humanity spanning back to what is known as the very cradle of civilization, as we look around the world today, we see constant violations of the principles of Brotherhood.

Sadly, the very basic truth that led to Arjuna’s decision of the battlefield to cease war when he realized that he could not harm another without harming himself is still valid.

As we consider everything that is happening in the world today, it is easy to see that Unity and Brotherhood is not the guiding focus of how we, as citizens of planet earth, interact with one another.

However, I would like us to take a moment to consider how the world could be if we allow this vital principle to effect policies and politics. As we do this, let us imagine how treating one another with an awareness of Oneness would change the world.

Why Karma Is Involved In Brotherhood

Within the profound principle of Brotherhood and Unity is an essential mystery of how the Law of Karma works.

The Law of Karma is often misunderstood because it is a force that expands beyond the perspective of individual life experience into the guidance of the purpose of your Soul to learn essential lessons that are incorporated into your consciousness at the level of your eternal or Soul consciousness.

The timeless and eternal aspect of life, as an adventure created to enable you to learn the lessons of Love and the lessons of right human relationships, make learning about Brotherhood and understanding the Oneness of Humanity essential.

It is the Law of Karma, over the vast expanse of time that proves the adage that, “you cannot harm another without harming yourself.” Karma can be simply stated as, “you get the lesson until you learn the lesson.”

I believe this is throughout eternity and exceeds your life experience which makes it difficult to see and to understand from a personality individual life experience which is limited to identifying with your current personality and ego. That stated, this does not mean the Law of Karma is not real, but that it operates beyond the scope of our current individuated understanding.

Karma answers the question so many of us have about why certain things and situations occur in life that may not make sense and seem beyond our control as the guiding principle of Karma is to give the lesson to the eternal consciousness that you ultimately are, until you learn the lesson. This is true, not only for you but for everyone with whom you interact and relate throughout your life.

You may want to be conscious of your thoughts and words, so they don’t create negative karma by your actions.

What You Can Do for Brotherhood and Unity

You can join in this planetary work and this world service by simply saying at 5 p.m., wherever you are, The Blessing of the New Group of World Servers.

In this way, you can support the efforts for peace in our time and also be aware of our unity and brotherhood as the one humanity.

This blessing is offered in every country of the world, in the words of every culture. Each hour as it becomes five p.m. local time, the whole world joins in the effort to support and empower those who are working for the common good of the human family.

As this blessing goes around the world it is a demonstration and a viable manifestation of one world and one humanity’s consciousness that can bring us closer to the long-desired realization of brotherhood and unity.

You Can Make A Difference

I encourage you and invite you to join with your thoughts, your prayers, and your intentions in participating in this world-wide blessing that focusses on bringing the force of unity to manifestation for the greatest good of all.

I invite you to consider, in your actions and in your speech the principle of harmlessness.

I ask you to be an agent of goodwill in the world, demonstrating in your life and relationships, as well as where you can, the principles of brotherhood and sisterhood, harmlessness, and right speech as the underpinnings of right relationships in the world. In so doing you will be advancing the evolution of our collective consciousness.

Emerge, through the darkness of malice, into the bright light of Brotherhood that awaits you at the end of the tunnel. For indeed, it is often in times of greatest trial that the fires of nobility and virtue are kindled in the heart of humanity.

It falls to all of us – both as individuals and as a community – to work towards the achievement of this noble end. Transformation on an inner level will eventually result in transformation on a grander scale – and thus, As Above, So Below, As Within, So Without, as the Hermetic axiom goes. And this transformation may begin today, through the cultivation of the virtues of compassion, tolerance, and universal brotherhood.

Be One With the Body of Christ

There is in the Christian faith a concept that holds within in it such great mystery and such great power that it bears some deep pondering and consideration.

It is a thought we can only hope to comprehend with our hearts and minds open as we touch our Souls.

As you open to the presence of your Soul, enter into the essence of Spirit where you are beyond the limitations of matter.

Join in the mystical union with the Christ to support and add your efforts to His mission and work in the world.

This is a concept of what it means to “be One with the body of the Christ” that I have often pondered. I would like to share my thoughts and understandings on this today.

All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.
– Bible ESV 1 Corinthians 12:27

To enter into the awareness of your Soul is a mystical experience. It is through this expanded awareness that you can consider what it means to be a part of the body of Christ (beyond the Church as the body of Christ.)

This is truly a mystery and you must open yourself to this mystical experience to appreciate the full depth and scope of what that phrase means.

I have read in the course of my years of studying and pondering spiritual questions, the Body of Christ phrase used to describe the Church or the community of faith. However, that seems too limiting when I consider the full glory and power of the presence of the Christ. The Christ as the Risen Lord whose resurrection Easter celebrates is a living and vital force in the world today.

George Weigel, in an article on Easter and the Cosmic Christ believes, “that Christ’s transformed body is also the place where men enter into communion with God and with one another and are, therefore, able to live definitively in the fullness of indestructible life.”

I believe you can by your love, and with your life, support His work in the world. You can help bring into the world the meaning of the words affirmed around the world as the mystery of faith on Easter morning. Christ has died, Christ has risen, and Christ will come again.

Indeed, Christ coming again joins with the prophesies and promises of all religions across the world.

In the explorations of the Ageless Wisdom is expressed a concept of the Christ as The Word Soul and as we join with His Light, His Love and more importantly His purpose as World Savior, that concept expands.

In meditation when we join symbolically with the Christ, by invocation into the exalted energies of the heart of the Christ, we are opening our heart, mind, and Soul to a mystical and almost magical unity with the body and mission of the Christ in the world today.

In the exalted moments of prayer or meditation that you can reach His Divine Presence, you realize He calls you to a life of service. This calling to active service was revealed by Jesus in the parable of Judgment Day. Matthew 24:40. To realize that and consider that each time that you serve your fellow man, the good that you do is being done for the Christ (or even to the Christ) really expands this concept of the body of Christ. In my lifelong ponderings, this seems to speak to my heart, my mind and my very Soul.

This call to service includes all of humanity as a part of the brotherhood with Christ, a brotherhood that he calls “even the least of these my brethren.” To consider all (wo)men united in a brotherhood of man seems to give a hint to what it means to be an active disciple of Christ, of mystically joined as a working and living demonstration of His love and compassion in the world.

For you to join in the body of the Christ as a part of His work and mission in the world, seeing the Christ in the face of all of your fellow man, and serving the Christ every time you serve your fellow man may be a broad reach. It is what motivated Mother Theresa when she went into the hell holes of Calcutta. It is a level of work and service that seems beyond what you are capable of doing except as you enter into this mystical union of the body of Christ. That empowers you to achieve and dare acts of love, compassion, and service beyond what you would otherwise consider or dare.

In my own life, to give me the strength to provide the love and the service that the world so desperately needs, I often use this Affirmation:

The Love of the Christ flows through me. Alone, I am nothing.

In the writings of the Ageless Wisdom, we are told that the work and mission of the Christ is a unifying of His followers on a planetary level, that have now 2000 years after He walked with us on the earth expanded to a worldwide work and service that is known as The New Group of World Servers. These are the men and woman of goodwill who are energetically united to serve their fellow man acting as if in each act of service they are serving the Christ.

This fellowship of planetary service is united energetically under the direction of the Christ. It is a group of Souls of many religions and paths unified in the love and dedication to the love of the Christ and creating on the earth the conditions that Christ can come again. These mystical unions of Souls most probably have never met, but their commitment to serving the Christ as they serve their fellow man joins them as the material representations of the body of Christ in the world.

These men and woman of Goodwill are comprised of every religion. They answer to the promptings of the Christ through the connection and direction of their Souls. The limitations of doctrine and dogma fade as this call to planetary service guided by the Law of Love comes ever more into manifestation.

This service, this mystical connection throughout the world, seems to be how you (and I) can best join efforts in the mystical union of the Body of Christ at work in the world.

A profound and powerful way that you could join this holy effort is by combining your efforts with others across the planet every evening at 5 p.m., whenever it is 5 p.m. where you are in the world by saying:

May the Power of the One Life

May the Love of the One Soul
characterize the lives of all who seek to aid the Great Ones.

May we fulfill our part in the One Work
through self-forgetfulness, harmlessness, and right speech.

The “Power of the One Life” is a reference to the Christ.

In energetically joining with this world mission, and this world service, you are energetically expanding your life and the reach of your service.

To further enhance and support your mystical union with the Body of Christ I offer you a Mantra, I created for my own use in meditation, which I call, The Love of the Christ Mantra.

Love of the Christ Mantra

May the Love of the Christ enfold me

May the Light of the Christ surround me

May the Wisdom of the Christ guide me

May the Energy of the Christ sustain me

That I may go forth to serve my fellow man

Giving the Love of the Christ to comfort them

Giving the Light of the Christ to guide them

Giving the Wisdom of the Christ of to enlighten them

Giving the energy of the Christ to fill them

Christ is mystical and he addresses a deep esoteric principle that is a part of the mystery of faith. Thankfully, you do not have to understand this with your mind to experience it in your Heart and Soul.

Being One with the body of Christ is done as a Soul. Your connection with the others with whom you join through the community of faith is accomplished Soul to Soul.

Miraculously, by the simple act of joining your energy with the Christ and the community of all who serve Him in the world, through your invitation and intention, you can consciously experience this Love and Light through your own Soul. Remember, consciously striving to be One with the body of the Christ is enhanced when you join with others.

The promise that whenever two or more gather in His name He is with you, is a profound and powerful truth that can be used to enhance this experience.

Now is the dynamic and fertile time to open your heart, your mind and your Soul to this mystical union of Oneness.

Here is a prayer I wrote that may support you in this effort:

Beloved Lord Prayer

Beloved Lord

I come to you today with an open heart and an open mind to offer up my Soul to you. Please hold me in your radiant heart.

I offer myself up to be One with you in the mystical union of Souls that makes up your body in this world as an active service to you.

I put away any of my fears or concerns about my worthiness, relying on your grace and forgiveness to guide me and support me as I strive to serve you more completely.

As I receive the blessing of your Love freely, I commit to giving freely of my Love. This I do with intention and a commitment to serve others in your name.

I invite you to work with me in the world. Guide my words as I strive to help and comfort others. Direct my steps to take me where you need me to be. Let me be a source for your forgiveness and your grace whenever I discover those who need your healing touch.

I praise you and give thanks for this miracle of faith that I may be One with you for your glory and work in this world.

-Working in the World for Good

You can make a difference in the world.

By becoming weavers in the Light you can bring about the peace the world so desperately needs.

This weaving in the Light is a powerful method that comes from The Ageless Wisdom and is known as the “Technique of Triangles.”

Technique of Triangles

The Technique of Triangles builds with etheric substance through the Universal Principle that “Energy Follows Thought.” It is a work you do as a Soul, to empower other Souls who also are committed to world service.

The Light of the Soul Descends — Soul Light Descending

You can become a weaver in the Light by invoking and inviting the Presence of your Soul and then declare your intention to join with other Souls to help make the world a better place.

You can do this because you are more powerful than you imagine. Just remember that when you weld the power of the Light, you are energizing right action and right human relationships.

Take a moment each day to join with me, and others throughout the world who comprise the energetic network of The New Group of World Servers.

At your intention and invocation your Soul becomes a part of an etheric and energetic network of Light, Love, and Power, that then spans the world, spreading Goodwill. The Light you are weaving is Soul Light.

To join in this purpose all you need to do is imagine your Soul as a radiant point of Light about 3 to 6 feet above your head and then see that Light connecting with another Soul, then another until three Souls have formed a triangle.

Continue to imagine that interconnection of Souls coming together as triangles. As you connect in this mystical formation, as a group of Souls you are empowering and supporting the work of the Will to Good in the World.

Expand this tapestry of Light out to all who you know and most poignantly all whom you love. You can add to this friends and family, co-workers and colleagues, even casual acquaintances.

Since the network you are building is a Soul connection, it is free from your personal will and completely harmless. You are joining with the Divine intention for humanity which is the will to good. This is mystical energetic group work, which will benefit the world.

As you do this, you help weave and strengthen the Light, the Love and the Power that can transform the world. You are not alone. Across the planet, every day, this group joins energetically and as 5 p.m. moves across the earth this daily infusion of Light helps and heals humanity.

International Day of Peace

Peace is one of the most important things in the world.

To have an international day, where across the world people focus upon peace, is a powerful event on many subtle and energetic levels.

It is a clarion call to humanity to manifest peace on this beautiful and so often war beleaguered planet to demonstrate that peace is possible.

This day, this International Day of Peace September 21 can help bring about peace and you can help and participate in that effort. To do so first realize that the Universal Principle that “energy follows thought” is a force that can be used to invite and invoke peace. Every thought you have of peace today, world peace, and personal peace of mind help build the energy of peace on the planet in the very real etheric substance of the planet.

This year Day of Peace theme draws attention to the importance of combatting climate change as a way to protect and promote peace throughout the world.

Climate change causes clear threats to international peace and security. Natural disasters displace three times as many people as conflicts, forcing millions to leave their homes and seek safety elsewhere. The salinization of water and crops is endangering food security, and the impact on public health is escalating. The growing tensions over resources and mass movements of people are affecting every country on every continent.

Peace can only be achieved if concrete action is taken to combat climate change.

Today peace faces a new danger: the climate emergency, which threatens our security, our livelihoods and our lives. That is why it is the focus of this year’s International Day of Peace. And it’s why I am convening a Climate Action Summit.

What Can Youth Do To Get Involved?

Young people are stepping up to the challenge, close to half a million youth around the world have taken action on climate change in their homes, schools, and communities. According to UNFCCC, they are key actors in raising awareness, running educational programs, promoting sustainable lifestyles, conserving nature, supporting renewable energy, and adopting environmentally-friendly practices.

This year, the International Day of Peace Student Observance will provide a platform for young people to showcase the projects that they have undertaken to fight climate change and promote peace.

What Can You Do To Help

This invitation and invocation of peace unify you with the work and the efforts of all of the men and woman of goodwill who work for peace. This energetic group of humanity is known as The New Group of World Servers.

It is a group that you can be energetically a part of by conscious registration of that fact that you are a man or woman who ascribes to the principles of the Will to Good in the world. As such, there is no belief or dogma required. The work of this group is energetic and is a Soul or spiritual work so it is subtle and often going on beyond the conscious mind. You can strengthen and empower that service to humanity and the world by engaging your conscious mind and linking in worldwide service by joining daily to say The Blessing of The New Group of World Servers.

It has long been a part of my meditation practice, and the meditative practice of untold many across the world, to join at 5 p.m. every day (in your time zone) and say:

The Blessing of the New Group of World Servers

May the Power of the One Life
pour through the group of all true servers;

May the Love of the One Soul
characterize the lives of all who seek to aid the Great Ones.

May we fulfill our part in the One Work
through self-forgetfulness, harmlessness and right speech.

In joining your conscious energy and thought to this group you empower the forces of good in the world on a subtle but still powerful level.

I invite and encourage you to join with me and the other men and woman of goodwill around the world at 5 p.m. daily in saying this simple blessing. Since it is always 5 p.m. somewhere in the world your efforts join to make this blessing travel around the world every day.

I have found over the years as I practice saying this blessing daily that it is a brief pause to align me with the work and service of my Soul and the Oneness of humanity that brings a sense of peace and calm in the midst of my busy day.

As is true so many times on my spiritual journey, by giving I receive and by blessing I am blessed.

To join with this group today while the world population is focusing on Peace is especially auspicious.

Peace is an integral component of the energy of the Divine. To open you to the essence of peace energy as it flows from Source, it may help understand that peace is a manifestation of the Spirit of Peace. By tuning and aligning your Soul and your energies to this stream from cosmic love you enhance and empower your life with a peace that can give you greater peace of mind and a sense of peace in the wholeness of your being.

The sense of peace, first within your heart, your emotions and your mind is an exalted state of being and of consciousness. To feel the blessing of peace, both as you bless another and are blessed opens the energy of grace for the deep spiritual sensation of inner peace is a manifestation of a being aligned with your Soul, the Divine and Love.

We all have the Right To Peace.

In this alignment, when you are invoking and inviting peace you are also aligning with the Spirit of Peace. Also at times referred to as the Spirit of Peace and Equalibribrim for the energies of equilibrium are most certainly an element of peace.

To achieve inner peace in your meditative life, your prayer life and your spiritual life is one of the most valued results of living a spiritual life. To take that blessing into the world, to be a peacemaker in this world is the call to action that the International Day of Peace works to inspire. Stand up for your rights!

Therefore, it seems appropriate on this day that you consider and ponder upon what needs to shift in the world to help humanity have peace.

P.S. The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by resolution 36/67 of the United Nations General Assembly to coincide with its opening session, which was held annually on the third Tuesday of September. The first Peace Day was observed in September 1982.

In 2001, the General Assembly by unanimous vote adopted resolution 55/282 which established 21 September as an annual day of non-violence and cease-fire.
