Life is About Learning to Love

Life is About Learning to Love

Check out Life Is All About Learning To Love by Genevieve Gerard

This article is part of my ongoing Series on Love.

To those who ponder the meaning of life, the purpose of life is a looming question.

So much of life is wonderful and glorious.  And, so much of life is painful and a struggle that even the most casual observer will conclude that it must have a purpose, a purpose that is deeper and more meaningful than simply, we live, we die.

I believe there are, in the pondering of life’s purposesome fundamental truths, and principles that I have come to understand that I would like to share with you.

It Seems That Life Is About Learning

That raises the question of who is it that is learning?  Since I am a spiritual teacher, I examine the world from that perspective.  I consider the human experience a multi-level adventure of life that involves incorporating and integrating our whole self, not only our physical self, but also our emotional self, our intellectual self, and, from my perspective, our Spiritual Self.

I believe that within each of us is a spark of Divine Light that is the Soul.  The Soul is the eternal essence of what lives beyond our temporal and physical body.  It is the seat of our consciousness and is integral in offering us the situations and circumstances that provide us the opportunity to learn and grow to expand our awareness.

To me, life seems to be a vast and diverse university where we, as students, are given the opportunity to learn.

Some lessons we learn quickly and easily, others we learn through suffering and sorrow, yet each event, each circumstance, every situation grants us an opportunity to understand something we may not have realized before.

Expand Your Consciousness and Purpose

To make sense of the experience of life and understand what it is all about it seems that you must expand your consciousness and awareness into the realm of purpose.

To me, to look around the immense diversity of circumstances and situations, the vast variety of the forms that life takes here on this little planet floating in a Universe of infinite and ever-expanding space, there is a purpose to creationWhat do you think your purpose is?

Your purpose in life is to find your purpose
and give your whole heart and soul to it.
     ― Buddha

Somehow the mind of the Creator, who could create the world we see and the Universe we are just beginning to sense and more fully understand, maybe inconceivable to the majority of us but you can still ponder your purpose.

After many years of studying the mysteries of life, especially the ponderings of thousands of years of recorded experience about the meaning of life, I have made some observations and conclusions about life that speak to the question of purpose.

As I have observed and considered this observation, particularly in light of the concept of the purpose of life and the meaning of life, I have drawn some conclusions.

I do not ask you to believe my findings but rather to turn to your own Soul, your own inner voice that resonates with TRUTH.  It is from that Source of inner wisdom that I ask you to read and consider what I am suggesting.

You Are More Than A Physical Body

We all know that we have a physical body, a physical nature. And we know that that body lives a span of time and then dies.  That is an observation that any casual observer can make.  The question that this fact raises about the purpose of life is what happened in the university of life between that moment of life and that moment of the death of the physical body?

Most who have ever lost a loved one have observed that when they look at the newly lifeless carcass of someone they loved, that the body is not the person they loved. Something is missing.

It seems that realization gives us an extraordinary hint.  Although we all have a body, we are more than our body.  What makes up a human being is far more diverse and complex than merely a physical body.

That leads to the question of who we are and what we are since we can easily observe we are not only a body.  We are more.  Certainly, an active and integral part of who and what we are as a human being includes our emotions.

From the first breath of life, we begin to feel, and throughout our life, we are learning to understand and incorporate our feelings and emotions.

Indeed, in this great university of life that we all experience understanding and hopefully ultimately mastering our emotions is the course work for many, if not most, of life’s lessons.

That process of understanding is a function of your brain, and the understanding of how the power of your higher mind works is one of the most empowering lessons you can learn in your time in the university of life.

It is a lesson you learn from the perspective of your eternal spark (your Soul) and incorporates into a sense of truth and knowledge that informs and influences the actions you take and the decisions you make as they are presented to you in this life, your life.

Your Soul is available to you from the first cry of your birth and through life until the last breath that you take.  Your Soul as the eternal aspect of you, as the seat of your consciousness, is integral to not only this life adventure but to all the experiences and trials and errors from which you have learned across the span of time into the edge of eternity.

The lessons you learn in this life are a part of a vast evolutionary expansion of wisdom and understanding.

The tasks of life can be difficult, for they require merging together a material and physical body with an eternal and spiritual nature.

Fortunately, the Soul has all of eternity to help us learn how to do this.

Fortunately, from the Soul’s perspective, none of us are limited to one lifetime, to only one lifetime of attendance in the university of life.

Your Soul is eternal, and therefore life is also eternal.  Everything you have ever learned, every herculean hurdle you have conquered is in your consciousness, available to be called upon by your Soul to help and support you in this life experience, this life adventure, any particular life lesson.

Will you make mistakes in your life?  Of course, that is how you learn.  You don’t need to suffer from shame and doubt and remorse, you only need to learn.

Within the eternal life of your Soul, you have the opportunity to experiment, try differently, do better.  Forgive yourself, forgive those who hurt you, and consider what have you learned.

What might you learn and how might you do better today? Ponder on this every day.

The idea that you as an eternal being (a Soul) are learning the lessons of life and will be brought back into the experience of life to demonstrate what you have learned in your current adventure may be new and different for you.  It is undoubtedly a way of looking at the world that is different.  It is not even a traditional understanding of reincarnation.  It is undoubtedly different from the conventional dogma of heaven and hell waiting for you at the end of your life.

My just exploring these concepts, considering these concepts, may raise within you all kinds of rejection and resistance or it may be a relief.  But I ask you only to put those thoughts aside and in quiet contemplation consider what could be so crucial that all of life would be arranged around learning.  Ponder on this.

Learn To Love

I believe the answer to what could be so crucial to learn, is Love.  It is not easy for a human being to learn to Love.  Our selfishness, our pettiness, and our fears create a myriad of obstacles.  Transcending those factors to place the wellbeing of another or others may be something we struggle with every day.

Learning to Love can be a big lesson.  It is perhaps the biggest lesson we as human beings may ever learn.

Love one another
     ― Jesus Christ (John 15:12)

Over the span of human history, humanity has been told to love one another.  Jesus not only instructed his followers to “Love One Another,” but offered his life as an example for how to love as he went on to say “as I have loved you.”  It seems that even the most prideful among us would admit that this instruction is beyond where most of us are in our consciousness.

Fortunately, the Divine principles of Grace and Mercy give us various life Soul experiences to master this challenging lesson.

It is to learn how to Love and what it means to Love
that I believe is one of our main purposes of living.
     ― Genevieve Gerard

Love is the one thing you can create in your human life adventure that does not die when you die.  Love, when it is created, creates a bond that is between Souls, and as it is built between your eternal aspect of yourselves, it is eternal, beyond time, unlimited by space.

It is to learn how to Love and what it means to Love that I believe is one of our main purposes of living.

It is what can bring the eternal Soul of humans into communion and companionship with the Divine Creator.  It is what I believe the Creator created humanity to do.

Love has so many ways it can be expressed, so many vast possible relationship permutations that can be created in life that it seems we humans need the opportunity to learn and explore love throughout eternity.

I know that I have failed to fully love so many times as I look over my life that I am grateful that I have more than one lifetime to learn.  I am thankful that within me there is an eternal spark of Divine Light that will give me the lesson until I can demonstrate that I have learned the lesson.

Learning to love is a valuable lesson.  When we, as humans learn to love one another the world will be heaven on earth.

We need only to look around the world in which we live to see that human consciousness still has a significant way to go to live that prediction.  But the promise of a new heaven and new earth is in the desire of all of humanity.

We know that learning to love and achieving the instruction to “Love one another as I have Loved you” (John 15:12), would create a different world, a better world; a world worthy of being in the heart and mind of a Creator who could envision and create the wonder of this world we as humans are blessed to inhabit.

Remember that life is about learning to love and your eternal Soul can teach you this lesson if you listen deep within your heart.

The Longing to Be Loved

The Longing to Be Loved

Longing To Love by Genevieve Gerard

This article is part of my ongoing Series on Love.

As we enter the new year I have been thinking about the need for Love.

Longing for Love seems to be a common denominator of the human experience.

Have you ever wondered why love is so important?  Have you ever thought life would be a whole lot easier if you had never loved?  Have you ever wished that you did not have this deep need bursting inside of you to give love and the even more troublesome need to receive love?

Love seems to be an inconvenient essential in life.  Ironically, love is both the source of life’s greatest joys and life’s most profound sorrows.

Somehow, mystically and almost magically, learning to love is woven into the very fabric of life.  Both the urge to love and the heart-wrenching need to be loved can be inescapable.

Since love seems to be so essential in life, you might think it should not be the source of so much confusion and pain.  Since the need to love another and the need to be loved is so prevalent, you might think love would be easy to give, and easy to receive.  After all, love is something we all need and all long to give.

The Life Lesson of LOVE

Why, I have often asked myself as a counselor and life coach, is it so hard for people to learn how to love, and why is it so hard for people to let themselves receive love?  As I ponder this question, I am aware that I have come to believe that learning about love is one of the essential lessons of life.

As I say these words, I must clarify that I mean that love is much more than a life lesson, I mean that it is THE life lesson.  I believe it is the lesson life was created to learn.

The need for love lies at the very foundation of human existence.
                      – Dalai Lama

Our world, our bodies, our life, is the simultaneous merging of what is material and temporal with what is eternal and spiritual; Love is what brings these two very diverse worlds together.  Part of the life lesson of love is learning what and how to love.  Confusing these issues is easy.

You must remember to love people and use things, rather than to love things and use people.
               –  Archbishop, Futon Sheen

The more I ponder and consider the meaning of life and my own life’s purpose I am aware that learning to love is the lesson we all are exploring in our life adventure.  The way we learn to love may be unique to each individual, but the theme expressed throughout a myriad of manifestations is consistent.

The future success of humanity is dependent upon love winning, we all, you and me, must learn to love.  Love is the underpinning for guiding and directing Right Human RelationshipsLove is more than the passionate emotions of longing and attachment that are often ascribed to it.

Love Can Be the Answer to All Life’s Questions

Love ironically can serve as the guide by which you can answer most if not all of life’s questions.  Since learning the lessons of Love seem to be the motivation behind life’s varied experiences I would like to suggest a little question I often asked myself when facing a decision.  That question is:

How is Love best served in this situation?

It is not a simple answer.  To give in and give someone what they want may not serve Love.  This is a lesson that any family member of someone plagued by an addiction of any kind has needed to learn.

Love is not best served when you harm yourself in the name of Love.  That is not Love.  That is not what love requires of you.  And, most importantly, that is not how you love unconditionally.

Misconceptions About Love

The Media and a multitude of “chick flicks” and romance novels propagate a lot of misinformation about Love.  What may make a good drama because it accurately reflects the pain and pathos of emotions is not the guide for how love is best served in life.

These illusions and glamours about love lead to lots of heart-brake and heart-ache as you strive to make Love into what it is not to meet these fantasy images.  That leads to a profound misunderstanding about the nature of love.  That misconception is that “Love Hurts.”

It is not Love that hurts.  It is unmet and unfulfilled expectations that hurt.  Again, I state, it is not Love that hurts.  It is actually the failure to Love that hurts.

To learn what Love is is essential.  However, it is of as much importance to learn what is Not Love.

This is particularly difficult when the person creating harm to you or pain in your life tells you that they love you.  It is important to understand what is not love, in order to free yourself from those who use the need to love and be loved as the basis for manipulating and harming you.  This false identification of love is sadly the most significant abuse of the innate desire to love and be loved.  It has left a string of broken hearts and broken lives across the planet.

Loving Yourself

Freeing Love from the illusions and misunderstandings that are often sold in the world as love requires understanding how to Love Yourself.

When you answer the question “How is Love Best Served?” loving yourself must also be considered.

Loving Yourself is an important life decision and an essential spiritual decision.  The result of the illusions and delusions about love that media’s misinformation campaign has created is that you are tempted and encouraged to accept abuse and pain in the name of love.  It is essential to discriminate and understand that criticism and abuse are not love.

Self-sacrifice is not noble.  Allowing yourself to be harmed is against what Love means. Part of Loving yourself is creating boundaries and honoring yourself.

Balancing what is right to give in a situation with the self-respect and honoring yourself is what loving demands.  It is the background against which learning to Love is played.

Sometimes giving someone what they want is not loving.  Sometimes is not even helpful when you consider the whole situation.  Woven into the answer to the question of “How is Loved Best Served?” is the awareness of the long-term implications of a situation, and the unintended consequences that can happen when you do not consider self-respect and harmlessness as part of the decision that is important.

This merging of the consideration of how Love is best served is stated eloquently by Shakespeare in Hamlet, Act 1 scene 78-82:

“This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.”

Loving yourself, being true to yourself, taking care of yourself are all important parts of learning to love.  Not only learning to love yourself, but learning to love another.

The Longing to Be Loved & Give Love

The longing to be loved and the deep longing to give love are part of human nature.  Yet, the yearning to give love and express love is also a part of your Soul’s nature.  This makes Love both unique and important because it is in loving that your material and animal nature needs and desires can also express your Spiritual essence.

It is in this blending of your Soul (your Divine Spark) and your Personality (your body, emotions, and mind) that happens when you love another or are loved that a miracle happens.  That miracle is that something that is eternal is created in your temporal and material life.
                        – Genevieve Gerard

Love becomes the bridge in consciousness that opens you to the life of your Soul, whose nature is love and whose very essence is Love.

Love is what makes life worth living.  It is the core of personal joy and the essence of all meaningful relationships from friends to lovers.

Learning to Love weaves together in a fantastic life tapestry two essential lessons that make life work.  One is how to love yourself, and the other is how to love anotherIn those lessons, you learn to express your dual nature as a human being and your Spiritual nature as a spark of Divine Light. Ponder on this.

Namaste,

   Genevieve

The Dance of Love Throughout Eternity

The Dance of Love Throughout Eternity

– Even in death love prevails

Read The Dance of Love Throughout Eternity by Genevieve Gerard

This article is part of my ongoing Series on Love.

A profound truth that resonates deep within your Soul is Love Never Ends.  It defies logic and yet is cherished and depended on upon, especially when you lose a loved one to the tyranny of death.

Love and death are archetypically tied together in the human consciousness.  Death is one of life’s experiences that makes you wonder about life with a need to understand.

It is often the loss of a loved one through death that causes you to begin to explore life beyond the limitations of matter and the five senses.  It is not uncommon for the death of someone you deeply love to open your mind to reality and consciousness that is more than what you can touch and feel in the material world.

It may be that when you love someone, your awareness expands beyond the limitations of your physical awareness.  Take a look back over your life and consider whether life is larger and more wondrous than what is only physical.

Love is the key that unlocks your understanding of life beyond what is only physical.  This dichotomy exposes the reality and understanding of life as a dual existence.  This duality requires merging what you experience and perceive with your physical sensations, with the perceptions of your Soul.

It is both mysterious and miraculous that you can be aware of physical reality and spiritual truths simultaneously.  As you explore this duality, you begin to understand the full potential of what it means to be a human being.

Love is the greatest teacher of truth that you have in your life.  The lessons of love and perceptions of love are realer and may be more important than any doctrine ever preached.  This is because the lessons of love are recognized deep in your heart and Soul.  When you love someone you know you are transcending into what is real and meaningful in life.

Love allows you to take on power that is not available with any other human endeavor.  It is a unique force that is available when death brings the sorrow of separation.  In spite of the stark reality of mortality, the love is still there.

That makes the death of a loved one an opportunity to learn and expand your spiritual consciousness.  Somehow, the very breadth of love and the stark reality and pain of death are incongruent.  In spite of the loss and the sorrow of someone who you love dying you are confronted with the awareness that your love somehow not only did not die but also understand to the depth of your being could not die.

Life’s lessons, the particular lesson that love reveals come with a resonance of knowing that transcends understanding.  Although love’s lessons may support and fuel faith, they transcend faith.  Love teaches truth.  Truth has the power of revelation that extends into the very essence of your being.

Your Soul has no doctrine, no dogma, and no denomination, yet it always resonates with the truth.

You may not understand the hows & whys of this, but the knowing and recognition that comes with acknowledging the truth are unmistakable.  Your Soul recognizes the truth and understands the mysterious and miraculous with a profound sense of knowing.

Even in the midst of mourning and sorrow you realize that love is not limited to the physical body which you now know and understand to be just a temporary vehicle for your Soul.
       – Genevieve Gerard

There is within you an amazing teacher that always knows what is true.  That insight opens your awareness to understanding the mysteries of eternity that are otherwise incomprehensible and unknowable.  It is that knowing that becomes apparent when striving to cope with the death of a loved one.  Ultimately, to lose someone you love to death brings you face-to-face with the truth that love cannot die.

THE RING OF TRUTH

It is the test of truth known by your Soul that I ask you to apply to any and all of your teachings.  Simply give any experience the test of the “ring of truth,” if it resonates in your Soul as truth, you cannot be misled.

When you open your life to love, you create a bond that is beyond both time and space.  You open the door to what is Divine in life and what is eternal.

Comfort comes with realizing that love transcends even death itself because it exists within eternity.

Love is the bond that connects your Soul to the Soul of your beloved.  This bonding of love is beyond the physical expression because it happens between two Souls.  This bonding of love cannot be destroyed by death because it exists within the eternal.  This bond of love is what you know is still there as you face the fact of mortality.

You may have to learn to live without the companionship of a loved one’s presence in your life, but you can draw succor and strength from the realization that the bond of love continues throughout time.

When you consider the many ways and roles in life that express love, the eternal nature of love begins to make sense.

Time is too slow for those who wait, too swift for those who fear, too long for those who grieve, too short for those who rejoice, but for those who love, time is eternity.
         – Henry Van Dyke

When you remember all those you have loved in life, and the many diverse ways that love manifests in your life, the expression of eternal love through our life begins to make senseWe all seek to bond with others through loveThat occurs from the initial bond of love that an infant seeks from its MotherIt continues into the love of close childhood friends and the romance and sexual love of finding a mate.

Love ultimately directs all of the relationships of our lives.  Friendship bonds can be stronger than familial bonds.  There are also sisters and brothers whose relationships are so much more than friends are.  These differing themes and variations in relationships that provide the expression and support of love in life create what I call, “the dance of love throughout eternity.”

YOUR DUALITY IN LIFE

Each life adventure provides different roles and relationships through which you can experience love.

It is with this insight on love that you can expand your understanding and awareness to make peace with the concept of physical death.  It is through this expansion of your consciousness that thousands of little mysteries can be clarified.

To live in a temporal word of matter that experiences the loss and heartbreak of death yet be an eternal Soul who is a spark of Divine Light requires a dual reality and requires a dual awareness.  This duality in your consciousness can be a strength that explains many of life’s challenges.

This duality of a Soul, who has a body but is a being that is so much greater than your body, provides strength and guidance.  Ponder on this!  Coming to understand your dual natures as you face life’s challenges and potential is revealing.

Death, by its very finality and limitation, brings you face-to-face with the Soul as it is only with an understanding of the life of the Soul and the actual nature of Love does death become bearable and comprehensible.

The eternal nature of your Soul and the eternal nature of love can be a comfort to you at a time of loss.  If you ponder these thoughts and put them through the test of the truth of your Soul’s knowing, your awareness expands to comprehend much in life that has previously been unfathomable and incomprehensible.

Love is exalted as the life lesson that honors the bonds of love throughout eternity as an expression of Divine Love in our adventure of life.  So remember that it is a dance of love throughout eternity.

Namaste,

Genevieve

Open Your Heart To Love

Open Your Heart To Love

Read Open Your Heart To Love blog post by Genevieve Gerard

This article is part of my ongoing Series on Love.

In this great university that we call life, there is perhaps no more important lesson we receive than learning to love.

Love manifests in our lives in so many different forms and circumstances that it is an ongoing opportunity to explore, experiment and express. If we open our heart and deeply consider what we have been learning in life that has given us the most joy and the most challenges, we can see that love is a predominant theme.

The great philosophers of old, most particularly Plato, defined love in three basic categories, that of Agape, how God loves us or how we are directed to love God; Philos, or love of friends and others; and the all important Eros, erotic or sexual love. And of course, the love of parents and children and family seems to be another important category.

Indeed, within these three or four very diverse categories that define love is enough lessons and life experiences to fuel millions of books, thousands of films and television scripts, and a seemingly endless stream of talk shows on media outlets around the world.

Life without love is like a tree without blossoms or fruit.
      ~ Khalil Gibran

There is perhaps no greater desire in the human heart than that of both giving and receiving love. Of course, as with so many dynamics of our all too human consciousness, we seem to feel that it is better to receive than to give. But if we explore the experience of love, dispassionately and deeply, we may find that we receive as much if not more love by giving rather than receiving it.

This may explain the teaching of Jesus when he said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Love, and lessons about Love are without question exalted in the life and teachings of the Christ.

When we think of the span of our years and focus on the times we have loved and the ways we have loved, we may realize that those times and events where we gave love unconditionally created such joy that we treasure the experience throughout our life. If we hold those experiences in our hearts and consider the power of those times to guide and transform our lives, we will begin to understand more of the dynamics of this great life lesson called love.

An honest review of our life will reveal to us that the times we have succeeded beyond our expectations in giving love have yielded rich dynamics to our experience of living. Likewise, those times when we have failed, on either side of the experience of love, to either give or receive, have resulted in profound heart-wrenching pain and sorrow.

Contained within the lessons of love is a microcosm of the many consciousness shifts we need to make to live a life of joy. We truly do need to be aware of the benefit of mastering this great lesson of life. Love is best learned in the act of letting ourselves give love and equally important, letting ourselves receive love. Ponder on this!

If we open our hearts to give love, we are immediately transported into the joy and blessings of love.
      ~ Genevieve Gerard

Loving is an experience that is immediately reinforced by expanding and enhancing our life experience.

Therefore, to learn about love we need only to give love as fully and completely as we can and to accept all that love offers to our life. It is profoundly simple, but strangely, it is often not easy.

Opening to love opens us to so much of what is the very best of life that making a commitment to love is a powerful portal to the gifts of awareness and joy. I encourage you to open your heart to love and embrace this lesson as a great adventurer and explorer of life.

Namaste,

Genevieve
